Prime Minister Narendra Modi will arrive on December 14 in the city for the induction of the much-awaited Kalavri class submarine into the Indian Navy.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that the PM will arrive in the city in the morning for the induction, which will also see Union Minister for Defence Nirmala Sitharaman in attendance, at the Mumbai Naval dockyard. The diesel-electric attack submarine will be the first in 17 years to be inducted into the Indian Navy after the induction of INS Sindhurashtra in 2000.

‘K class’ submarines are known to possess the best technique when it comes to diesel-electric attack submarines. India at present has only 13 diesel-electric submarines including nine in the category of Sindhughosh submarines.

After an agreement worth $ 3 billion with France in 2005, these diesel-electric submarines were to be built after technology transfer. The first of these submarines was to be inducted in 2013 but after a delay of four years, it will now be inducted on December 14.
