One of the Ravi Pujari gang members arrested by Mumbai crime branch in connection with the plot to kill film producer/director Mahesh Bhatt and the firing outside producer Karim Morani's residence, is said to be an informer of the Maharashtra Anti Terrorism Squad (ATS).

According to the crime branch, Anees is one of the important members of the gang which it had arrested a week back from Khar.

How long was he an informer?
According to sources, Anees Merchant alias Radiowala, who was arrested along with his gang members, have been an informer of a few of the ATS officers. During the interrogation it was revealed that Anees had tipped off ATS officers about various activities in Mumbra area. The crime branch is also investigating in which all cases Anees had helped ATS.
"We got a lot of information from those arrested, but what came as a shock was that Anees had been an ATS informer and had been working for a few officers for the last few years," said a crime branch source.

Why is Anees an important catch?
The investigation agency claims Anees is an important catch as he had directly been in touch with his relative Obaid Radiowala, who was relaying orders of gangster Pujari to the 13 (arrested) accused.
According to the agency, Anees had had WhatsApp conversation with Obaid in which there are details about the firing that took place outside Morani's house.

Has the information been verified?
When additional commissioner of police (Crime) KMM Prasanna was contacted, he said: "We are verifying the information about Anees being an informer, but at this point of time I can't comment more on it." He added: "We will also be looking at in which all cases he had helped the agency, and in what way."

How many are in custody now?
The crime branch on November 17 arrested 13 people in connection with the plot to shoot at Bhatt and for firing outside Morani's residence in Khar. It had also recovered six guns and 26 rounds from the accused, and also identified a local business man who had provided money to the accused through hawala.
