In a tragic incident, a 25-year-old catering official with the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) lost his life after he fell through the gap between the platform and the August Kranti Express footboard at Andheri station on Monday evening.

According to officials, Aashish Singh, an IRCTC employee, was boarding the August Kranti Express on platform number four a little while after the train halted at the station around 6pm. Singh was trying to enter the train when it began to move. Singh apparently lost his grip on the door handle and slipped in the gap and got grievously injured, said the officials.

According to doctors at Cooper Hospital, Singh was brought in with severe crushed abdominal injuries possibly from the train running him over after he fell through the gap. "Singh was brought to the hospital by the Government Railway Police sleuths around 6.50 pm and declared dead on arrival. His body has been sent for post-mortem," said an official of the Cooper Hospital.

Top officials of IRCTC rushed to Cooper Hospital on hearing the incident. Officials said Singh's brother from Delhi was expected late on Monday night. Meanwhile, Railway Protection Force officials were monitoring the CCTV images of platform number four to find out what exactly happened.

Singh, a hotel management graduate, was employed with the IRCTC for the past four years. Officials said he was in-charge of VIP catering in the August Kranti Express.

"He was a very hardworking official and it is very sad for all of us at IRCTC to lose him in such a tragic manner," said Virendra Singh, group general manager, IRCTC, western region.

The Andheri railway police have registered a case of accidental death.

According to Shivaji Shinde of the Andheri railway police, a case of accidental death under Section 174 of the Criminal Procedural Code has been registered. "The train stops at Andheri station for around 3 minutes and it seems as if he lost his grip as he tried to enter the moving train," said Shinde.
