In a sad tale highlighting the apathy of the Brihanmumbai Mumbai Corporation (BMC), several plants on the median along a road in Bandra have withered away with no caretaker to water them.

A line of dead plants has been dotting the median along the kilometre-long stretch from the junction separating LK Mehta Marg and KC Marg near the reclamation ground for the last few months.

According to locals, after being planted, the shrubs were watered only for a few days by the civic body.

"The BMC planted them a few months ago and only watered them for a week or two. Thus, if you see, the entire stretch has withered away," lamented a resident, Shakil Khan.

As per a civic policy, maintenance and beautification of a median, divider or a traffic island along a road has been sourced to private agencies. The agencies were to use these stretches for advertisements of themselves and the BMC, while carrying out necessary maintenance of the area. However, the BMC reportedly found no taker for the stretch extending from the junction, near the reclamation ground, owing to poor vehicular traffic.

"Not many motorists use this stretch as it goes along a slum area. If you see the stretch along the reclamation ground leading to Lilavati hospital, you will find thick green cover of palm and other flowering plants," another resident, Krishna Bhatt, pointed out.

Local slum dwellers claimed to have watered the plants for some days, but due to the sweltering heat and shortage of water, they soon stopped.

When contacted, local corporator Tanveer Patel said, "I will have to check why this has happened. The stretch opposite the reclamation ground is well maintained and green. I shall ask the local ward office about the median after that."

Despite several attempts, the assistant horticulture officer from the H-west ward remained unavailable for comment.
