Two social workers from Vikhroli have filed a public interest litigation (PIL) in the Bombay high court, challenging the ‘Z’ level security cover provided to industrialist Mukesh Ambani by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), as sanctioned by the Ministry of Home Affairs.

The PIL, filed by Nitin Deshpande and Vikrant Karnik, claims that each member of the military and para-military forces is under oath to serve and save his nation. Compelling such members of the paramount forces of our nation to provide private security to influential people from the business class, politicians and celebrities under the cover of protection of life and property tampers with the morale and reputation of the entire force.

Further, the PIL states that despite the fact that there exists no real threat to their life or property, the influential class in our nation — top politicians, sports/film celebrities and rich industrialists — are now trying to avail the aforesaid categorised security with no sufficient cause but as a status symbol.

Around 20 CRPF commandos, headed by an inspector-rank officer, now guard Ambani after intelligence inputs from intelligence agencies hinted that there was a threat to his life. Ambani pays around Rs15 lakh per month for the security provided to him.

However, the PIL claims that in India, there are only 125 police personnel for every 1 lakh persons, whereas the actual figure should be 230 police personnel for every 1 lakh persons. If trained forces like the CRPF are diverted from carrying out their primary function and are asked to provide proximate security to an individual person, then the lack of special forces will have an adverse effect on the security of the public at large.

The PIL prays that the order to provide security to Ambani should be quashed and set aside and stayed till the final hearing of the petition.
