She may be afflicted with Parkinson's disease but she defies all signs of being bogged down by it. As a 66-year-old, Shail Pandey is less a patient of Parkinson's and more a painter.

The disease afflicted her fifteen years ago, but she was a painter since childhood. Ever since she learnt to hold a brush she has swayed and splashed it over canvas, saris, mugs, bottles or any other surface that she could garner to paint. Recently, an exhibition of her 24 paintings was displayed at Aashirwaad Gallery in Breach Candy. "The funds gathered by selling the paintings were donated to my support group," said Shail. Though her speech may slur slightly and her hands shiver, she has never deterred from painting. And when she cannot hold a brush and the attacks of Parkinson's become too severe, she throws aside her brush and starts painting with her fingers, she says. "I am a very determined person. If I find that an attack of Parkinson's has spoilt my painting, I start redoing it all over again. Art is therapeutic. I can practise it day and night and forget everything," Shail told dna.

Shail is a self made artist. She loves painting flowers and other elements of nature. She is inspired by post-impressionist era dutch painter Vincent van Gogh and Indian painter MF Hussain. "I love bright colours like the maroon, ochre, sea green and golden yellow. I paint nature but occasionally venture into painting with charcoal or do potraits," explained Shail.

Shail's daughter Geetanjali said that her mother's handwriting had started getting smaller when she was in her mid-fifties. "She was later diagnosed with Parkinson's and her symptoms worsenedover the years. Since the last few years, her medicines had started showing side effects where she experienced auditory hallucinations or heard noises. But, she is too strong to get bogged down. She gets depressed sometimes, but she has kept up with her art. She is an extremely social and an affable person. She paints what ever she lays her eyes upon, be they, glass surfaces, cushion covers, saris, bottles, mugs or canvas," Geetanjali told dna.

"I have found great relief and satisfaction in expressing herself myself through art. I am blessed that God has provided me with this bent of creativity," smilingly concluded Shail.
