Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday reminded Congress leader Nayaran Rane of the old adage, "People (who live) in glass houses shouldn't throw stones."

Fadnavis was replying to questions in the legislative council on the recent gang rape and murder of a minor girl in Ahmednagar's Kopardi village. In the course of his reply, he read out various past cases against Rane.

On Tuesday, Rane had stated that the BJP was a party of goons and that there were three chief ministers who were running the state. Fadnavis said he alone was quite capable of carrying out the responsibilities of the chief minister. "Who is calling the BJP a party of goons? I know that Mr Rane is a very humble and decent politician. Before making any allegations, the Opposition should think twice. I want to make it clear that henceforth none of my ministers will resign on the basis of allegations. If there is any solid proof, then only they will step down. People will judge me by my work, not on the basis of Opposition's allegations," Fadnavis said.

Rane had dropped a bombshell on Tuesday by claiming that a cabinet rank BJP minister had molested a woman IAS officer and that he had got enough evidence to prove this charge. "After this allegation, our ministers are asking each other about the cabinet minister Rane referred to. They are looking at each other with suspicion. Such allegations can destroy anyone's political career. We should not give much importance to Rane's allegations now. He had made allegations against Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi, Ashok Chavan and Ahmad Patel too. But, later he had changed his position. So, we should not take his charges seriously," Fadnavis said.

Interestingly, Rane did not counter the chief minister in the upper house. However, talking to the media outside the House, Rane said there was no substance in the chief minister's speech. "He did not answer my questions. I know the BJP cabinet minister who molested the woman officer. I will reveal the name at the right time. Now, they are in power, so it is their duty to check with their ministers and punish him," Rane said.

Terming the chief minister's speech as political, the Congress leader said, "Fadnavis has no plan to secure the state and strengthen the home department. I am not a person who will be afraid of the chief minister... If he has guts, then he should take action against me...," Rane said, adding, "I had asked who was the person who was caught with Rs10 crore in a suitcase at the Taj Hotel? He was caught in the police trap, but still no FIR was registered, nor action taken. Why? The chief minister should answer all these questions."

Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday said the Kopardi rape and murder incident involving a minor girl was very unfortunate. "We have appointed advocate Ujjwal Nikam as the public prosecutor for this case. We will put this case on the fast track and will try that all accused persons get the capital punishment. We are also giving Rs10 lakh relief to the victim's family," Fadnavis said.
