A little proactiveness on the part of residents of Juhu Koliwada in Santacruz (West) to get an old road repaired has cost them dearly. After starting work on the 120-mt long Revandkar Road after a decade, BMC officials have suddenly stopped all repair work and are giving residents the cold shoulder.

When did BMC start the repair work?
BMC had taken up the repair work three months, but has now stopped for unknown reasons even though there is still much to be done. Residents say that even if the civic body and the contractor decide to take up only one metre of road each day for repairs, it should have been completed by now.

In what way have citizens suffered for being proactive?
While the contractor is not answering the residents' questions regarding the work being stopped, civic officials are avoiding them and elected representatives are giving mere assurances, leaving the citizens frustrated.

What do higher officials have to say about this?
Ironically, Parag Masurkar, assistant commissioner of K–west ward, is totally unaware of the road work. When dna asked Masurkar about the status of the road, he said, "I am unaware about the status of the road. I have to check whether it has to be taken up for repair as yet or if it is half way done. I will inquire into the matter," said Masurkar.

What are the residents worried about?
A resident said, "We had taken up the cause of road repair rigorously. Later, we realised that the cleaning of storm water drains was taken up just two days before the BMC decided that new chambers would be laid. Why do both? Then, when we realised that all the plants and trees were to be chopped off, we took up that issue. It seems that the alertness of the citizens has not gone down well with the civic officials, politicians and the contractor. They don't like to be questioned. They will only be happy when citizens, though tax-payers, fold hands before them."

What are the problems in the area?
The area has nearly 25 buildings and a few independent houses. Half-done roads make for a back-breaking commute, while garbage vans have stopped coming. A small compactor can hardly manage the volume of garbage generated in the area. The road serves as a junction to several other roads leading to a gaothan, hence the continuous flow of traffic leads to dust floating in the air at all times.
