Following repeated complaints from Pedder Road residents, the roads department of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to take up repair and resurfacing of a major stretch of the road, most likely by next week. According to senior civic officials, mastic asphalt work will be carried out on the stretch between the Haji Ali junction and the Kemps Corner flyover.

Why's it being done?
Work on the stretch was already part of the BMC's master plan for roads. However, frequent complaints from residents of the area on the uneven surface and poor quality of the road prompted the civic body to take up the work on priority. Civic officials too confirmed that the work has been taken up on a priority basis as it is a VIP road and always crammed with vehicles.
Pedder Road is one of the busiest and congested roads of the city. The locality is home to prominent industrialists, politicians and bureaucrats.

What made the road uneven?
Additional municipal commissioner SVR Srinivas said, "The road was last resurfaced years ago. The storm water drain below the road was replaced recently, which made the road uneven. We will start the resurfacing work as soon as soon as we get the traffic police's permission."

How much will it cost?
The total cost of the work has been estimated at Rs9.4 crore, senior civic officials told dna. Once it starts, the work will be completed in two months and will mostly be carried out at night when there are fewer vehicles.

Where will the funds come from?
The proposal will not need the civic standing committee's approval because fresh funds won't be required for the project. "The funds will be met from the savings of other road works carried out regularly across the city," a civic official said.
