Passengers alighting at Goregaon railway station on Saturday evening were in for a pleasant surprise when they saw that the new foot-overbridge (FOB) had been opened for use. The Western Railways opened the new bridge towards the north-end without any fanfare and ribbon-cutting.

This new FOB has exit and entry points towards both the south and north ends, which will help disburse the crowd quickly. Currently, there are three bridges operational at Goregaon station, and this is the fourth. The structure comes as a boon for passengers who travel during peak hours as all other three FOB's used to be so crowded that passengers would have to wait for at least three to five minutes to even step on them. The situation was the worst on platform 2 and 3, on which two trains would arrive from opposite directions simultaneously, adding to the crowd.

The new FOB is a broad enough to take load of more passengers. It will also be connected to a new platform which is coming up for Harbour line trains at the western side of the station. When fully operational, it will also be connected to the MMRDA skywalk located at Station road in Goregaon West. This will benefit thousands of passengers.

The work on a fifth bridge is also in an advanced stage. It should be operational in a month or two if everything goes smoothly. The fifth bridge will also have a ticket-booking window.

Winnie Saldanha, a commuter, said, "It's better late than never. I have written many complaints to the railway authorities to complete the job at the earliest as it was tiresome to wait in queue. The bridge was a need of the hour because Goregaon station has seen manifold growth in passenger numbers as new residential and commercial places have come up in the recent past."

Sharat Chandrayan, CPRO, Western Railways, said, "Due to the election code of conduct still being in existence, it is inappropriate on our part to comment on it. But the bridge is open for public use."
