In order to generate revenue and create space for parking of buses in the city, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has decided to provide 12,000 square meters of land in Wadala for a pay-and-park facility with a capacity for 172 buses. The move is a part of MMRDA's plan for an inter-state bus terminal where buses from all cities and states can be parked at one location on arrival, and will also discourage illegal and haphazard parking of buses in the city.
A study by MMRDA in 2008 had suggested that parking space for around 500 buses can be made on the approximately 80 hectares of land that MMRDA owns in Wadala of which a majority is occupied by the Wadala Truck terminal (WTT) where the parking of buses has been proposed. According to MMRDA this is a temporary arrangement to decongest traffic on city roads and bring parking of all inter-state buses under one roof.
An official from MMRDA said, "This is a temporary arrangement inside WTT with a capacity for parking 172 buses along with bus washing facility, canteen and toilet. We will appoint a private contractor for three years who will operate and maintain it on a pay-and-park basis. The state government has already approved our plan for an inter-state bus terminal."
With a large number of inter-state and inter-city bus operations being run in the city by various state transport agencies, the inter-state bus terminal was planned in 2007 to bring them under one roof.
Recently, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who also heads MMRDA, approved a master plan for Wadala wherein the Authority plans to build a commercial hub similar to Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC).
