After digging up Dadar TT’s Dr BR Ambedkar Road, which is made up of cement and concrete, to trace a pipeline leak, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to reinstate it with paver blocks again instead of concretising it.

On Tuesday, a 48-inch underground water pipeline was punctured. To spot the leak and repair it, the officials had to dig up the road 10ft-deep. Now, the entire stretch outside Parsi Gymkhana at King Circle is completely marred with crater-sized pits, measuring up to nearly 450sqm-wide.

Meanwhile, a day after the pipeline burst, the scheduled water supply resumed but residents of the ward continue to be troubled by the damaged road.

The state-appointed statutory technical advisory committee (STAC) has repeatedly lashed out at the BMC for the manner in which it lays paver blocks.

The municipal commissioner had earlier recommended that paver blocks be laid only at road junctions.

A senior civic official from road department, while inspecting the excavation site, said the use of paver blocks is only a temporary resort.

“Once the foundation of the road is settled, we will carry out the concretisation.”

However, nearly 100m away from the site, a pipeline leakage was spotted at Dr BR Ambedkar Road in 2009. Then, the corporation had dug up the road and reinstated it with paver blocks, which has now sunk.

“Even then they promised to concretise it,” said Nikhil Desai, a resident.
