Result for the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) repeaters' exam was declared by the state board on Wednesday. The pass percentage for Mumbai and Maharashtra has increased from last year; the result, however, is still low. The state's gone up to 27.03% from 21.59%, while that of city has jumped to 21.93% from 17.92%.

Out of the 1.21 lakh that appeared for the exam from Maharashtra, only 32,921 passed.

For the first time this year, the repeaters' exam was conducted in July unlike the usual months of September-October. The written exam, for 136 subjects, was held between July 9 and 29.

Officials said the aim behind holding the exam in July instead of September-October was to help the students save their year. But with the result poor, the decision doesn't seem to have ultimately benefited students, they added.

Secretary of Mumbai Division Board SY Chandekar said, "The result this year is better than that of 2015, but students did not meet expectations."

From Mumbai, the number of students registered for HSC exam was 32,482, out of which 32,209 appeared. Only 7,063 of them passed. The exam was conducted in 54 centres.
