Pockets of south Mumbai (SoBo) went without water on Thursday after a civic contractor carrying out road works hit a 600mm (24 inch) pipeline causing a burst.

The incident occurred at around 12:40 pm on Bhulabhai Desai Road, opposite American Consulate, affecting supply to posh localities in the region. Owing to the incident, residents staying in areas from Haji Ali to Bhulabhai Desai Road, Bomanji Petit (Cumballa Hill), Mahalaxmi temple compound and Dr Rajab Ali Patel Road had to face dry taps during the regular supply slot of 6pm-11pm.

"The incident occurred after a road works contractor hit the pipeline while digging the road. This resulted in non-supply in these areas. The work is expected to go on till Friday morning and supply will be restored later in the day," said Ramesh Bambale, hydraulic engineer of BMC.

Bambale further said he immediately informed chief engineer (roads) AT Pawar about the incident and sought action against the contractor concerned. "I informed orally in this regard. The matter will be raised in writing on Friday. The roads department will take action against the agency concerned," Bambale added.

Meanwhile, the burst also affected traffic in the region. "Owing to the burst, the road was barricaded, slowing down vehicular movement in the area," an official attached to the disaster management cell said.

The civic body has engaged a team of around 20 officials and labourers to fix the damaged pipeline.
