Tuesday saw a lot of politics over potholes — Shiv Sena and BJP members exchanging of photo albums of potholes, an exhibition of 400 photographs of such craters, allegations by Nitesh Rane, and rasta roko by Congress corporator Waqarunnisa Ansari after she fell due to a pockmark and sprained her right ankle.

BJP MP Kirit Somaiya first handed over a photo album to mayor Snehal Ambekar in the presence of BJP corporators, with Sena corporators flanking Ambekar and flexing their muscles.

Somaiya, after handing over the album and giving details about the hardship citizens have to go through due to potholes, said the civic administration has agreed to fill all potholes in 15 days.

"For the past 10-15 days, I have been visiting the eastern suburbs. Leakages, unavailability of contractors and BMC's own limitations are leading to potholes," said Somaiya.

Ambekar too then gave an album to Somaiya and briefed him about craters on state-owned roads.

Earlier in the day, MLA Nitesh Rane and Mumbai Congress president Sanjay Nirupam had inaugurated an exhibition of 400 photographs of potholes across Mumbai from wards of Sena and BJP corporators.

"Sena-BJP and the civic administration are fooling citizens by saying that the number of potholes is less. The exhibition was an attempt to highlight this," said Rane.

"If the city has to be pothole-free, the BMC must be freed from the clutches of the saffron alliance."

Nirupam said they have demanded that an FIR against standing committee members be lodged.

Cong corporator's fall

Congress corporator from Mohammed Ali Road-Pydhonie fell on Ibrahim Rehamatullah Road during her visit to check the ward's cleanliness. "I fell while walking on the road due to a pothole. Roads are in a bad shape and B ward's assistant commissioner Udaykumar Shirurkar is doing nothing to fix that," said Ansari after getting an X-ray done. However, civic sources claimed that earlier in the day Shirurkar had taken action against 20-25 illegal stalls in the area, and the owners had rushed to Ansari for help. Knowing that she couldn't do anything for them had irked the corporator, they added.
