A small portion of a flat owned by one of the accused in the 1993 blast case collapsed on Tuesday morning.

At around 10am, a portion of a bedroom of Flat 501 fell onto the fourth floor apartment, Flat 401. There were no casualties reported. Samir Hingora’s father, son, daughter and others were in other rooms of the 2BHK flat at the time of the incident.

The flat in Delight Apartments located in Bandra (West) is owned by Hingora, who was sentenced to 9 years imprisonment by a Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA) court in 2007 for supplying actor Sanjay Dutt with an AK-56.

The 4th floor apartment is owned by Krishna Kapoor, a 75-year-old woman who stays alone. The building has 18 flats and is over 30 years old.

Speaking to DNA, Hingora’s son Danish said, “The floor might have collapsed due to some repair work that was going on inside.” He added that he has been living in that apartment for last 27 years.

Resident of an apartment on the ground floor of the building, Bansilal Lalwani said, “The society regularly repairs the building from outside, but all internal repairs are carried out by the flat owners themselves, depending on their requirement.”

Another resident added that the internal repairs in flat had some irregularities.

Secretary of Delight Apartments Ashok Totlani refused comment on the issue. But residents of the building said that a meeting will be held to discuss the issue in a day or two.

Officials of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the Bandra police inspected the site in the afternoon. A fire truck and an ambulance were stationed near the building till 4pm and the police were deployed at the spot till evening.

Civic officials said that a notice will be issued to the society on Wednesday. “The building appears to be very old. We will issue a notice to them under Section 354 and ask them to carry out the required repairs, structural audit and evacuation if required,” said an official from H (west) ward office.
