Parks and recreation: Civic body puts thrust on beautifying Mumbai

Although the civic budget for 2017-18 has reduced the allocation for road repairs or construction, there is a thrust on other infrastructure projects, such as beautification of gardens and beaches, and development of recreational grounds and new swimming pools. Funds have also been allocated for other civic amenities like development of storm-water drains, sewerage and better water supply. 

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has also given importance to waste-to-energy projects by proposing Rs 150 crore for treating generated waste scientifically at the Deonar, Mulund and Kanjurmarg dumping grounds. 

To encourage outdoor games, the civic body has proposed Rs 26.8 crore to upgrade 84 playgrounds in the city, Rs 70 crore for development of gardens and recreation grounds, and Rs 45 crore for constructing eight swimming pools in the city, including for redevelopment of swimming pools in Kandivli West to Olympic levels. 

The budget has proposed Rs 15 crore for beautification of beaches in Mumbai, which includes the ones at Mahim, Dadar, Shivdi, Seven Bungalows, Gorai, Versova and Aksha. The beautification drive includes providing decorative energy-saving fixtures and security.

In order to add a tourist spot in the city, the budget has provisions of Rs 1 crore for the beautification of Bandra Fort, located near the Bandra-Worli Sealink. The two adjoining gardens owned by the BMC has a total area of 25,000 sq m, and the corporation plans to develop it with a promenade that has a cycling track, illumination of the fort precinct, and renovation of the amphitheater and butterfly park. The total project cost is estimated to be Rs 30 crore.

To modernise Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Udyan and Zoo in Byculla, the civic budget has proposed Rs 50.25 crore. The project includes increasing the area of the Humboldt Penguin exhibit, development of toilets, a drinking water fountain and food kiosks in the zoo, and construction of 17 animal enclosures inside the zoo. A modern auditorium with a capacity of 750 seats is proposed for Byculla Zoo.
