Like any other day, when Andheri resident Mukesh Chabria came out of his house to head for work, it turned out to be a pleasant morning for him. As he was stepping into his car, he saw a card with a flower kept on the wind shield.

The first thought that crossed Chabria's mind was that someone was playing a mischief with him. However, on picking up the flower and looking at the card, he was not only pleasantly surprised but also felt a sense of responsibility. The card read: Thank You for parking your vehicle properly. And for being a responsible Indian.

Such cards were also kept on other vehicles parked on the road without violating any traffic norms, thereby giving a gentle pat on the back of thousands of individuals who adhere to traffic norms.

This is nothing but a ‘community centric’ initiative kick started by an organisation called Thank You India, which was started a month ago.

Hemant Gupta, founder of the organisation, said, “This is to create a positive vibe among motorists. Besides, it also creates awareness towards the society.”

The volunteers of the NGO have already distributed over 3,500 such cards in the western suburbs, that is between Bandra and Borivli. “We write a note saying thank you for parking it well and being a responsible citizen. To those who have not parked their vehicles properly, we leave a note saying Thank you for parking your vehicle well. In the future be a responsible citizen,” added Gupta.

The plan is to continue with this drive in other parts of Mumbai as well, gradually covering the eastern suburbs.

“The Traffic police is certainly happy with this initiative. We are supporting them in their endeavour. The organisation is planning such acts of positive gesture in other facets of traffic as well, including while following a signal, riding with helmet or observing lane discipline. This is very a good way to communicate and engage motorists to ensure road safety,” said BK Upadhyay, joint commissioner of police, Traffic.
