MUMBAI: It is a known fact that parents with children in class X and XII are under tremendous stress. Since there have been very few studies on how stress levels affect family life, The Yoga Institute at Santa Cruz will conduct a research on how yoga can help parents cope with exam stress. The institute has also received Rs35 lakh from the union health ministry for the research.

Earlier, a pilot study had been conducted by the institute at Jamnabai Narsee School, Juhu, with 80 parents whose children are in class X and XII. The results were then sent to the union health ministry.  “We checked their muscle tension level, blood pressure, ECG and conducted several blood tests. Only those without any health complaints were selected for the study,” said Hansaji Yogendra, director, The Yoga Institute.

The tests predictably revealed that most parents had complaints ranging from high blood pressure, hyper acidity, high menopausal tendencies, migraine and back pains. “Most parents had developed the symptoms once their children passed on to the crucial years. There were also a lot of fights in the family,” said Yogendra.

Parents were given yoga training at the institute for a month after the medical tests. “I practised slow breathing techniques in the morning and stretching exercises while taking a bath. Just sitting still for a while listening to the birds in the morning made me relax,” said Leela Kaushik, a parent.

Once the training was complete, another set of medical tests were conducted. It was found that parents with acidity and high blood pressure showed better results, said Yogendra.

The director of the institute will also present the yoga curriculum to government officials in Delhi on Thrusday.  “The curriculum has already been prepared and sent to the officials. We are also planning to integrate the findings of the research and give yoga training to parents along with students in schools,” she said.
