In the wake of an incident of child sexual abuse last year with one of their students, more than 200 parents of Sitaram Mill Compound’s, Mumbai Public School (MPS) (English medium) in Lower Parel, which is run by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) held a rally against child sexual abuse on Tuesday to create awareness among parents of different areas within one kilometer of their school.

While the child sexual abuse crime cases are on rise in the city and the state, the BMC schools are also ensuring to keep their students safe by creating awareness among their school students and parents.

After getting aware about child sexual abuse, parents of students in the school are trying to spread awareness among their community by distributing pamphlets with the help of NGO Akansha that works with 20 BMC-run schools, including MPS.

Sadhna Nakti, one of the parents, said, “First we held a meeting with parents of students from within the school and spread awareness among them.

“Then we decided to hold a rally to educate others. We distributed pamphlets among the people on March 8 and will be distributing among some more areas.

“We are also sticking posters on prevention of child sexual abuse so that the message is spread everywhere.”

Tushar Thakur, school coordinator for Sitaram Mill Compound (MPS), from Akansha Foundation, said, “After coming across a case of child sexual abuse on one of our school students, we decided to educate parents on prevention of child sexual abuse.

“The response was good. This has only been possible after the support of BMC for this cause.”
