The Dindoshi police on Wednesday lathi-charged a crowd of around 300 angry parents who were protesting outside the police station against the alleged sexual assault of a four-year-old in a Malad school. The police said they had to use force to stop the protesters from blocking the Western Urban Road. Heavy police force was deployed outside the school.

Dr Vinay Rathod, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone XII said, "We booked 13 persons under the Bombay Police Act. They were later let off with a stern warning. We had to use force as they were attempting to block the highway. We had to disperse the mob to maintain law and order in the city."

Undeterred by the lathi charge on the second day of protest, parents warned of a state-wide agitation if their grievances were not addressed.

Parents also forced the school to shut down, and issued an ultimatum to implement safety measures before restarting the school.

The peon was arrested for allegedly raping a girl inside the school toilet and remanded to police custody upto August 11.

"We protested at the police station as the female caretaker, who we believe abetted the crime committed by the peon hasn't been arrested. We will hold a statewide protest if the government fails to step in and resolve our issues. We want our children to be safe and also secure justice for the victim," said Archit Vyas, a parent.

The victim's mother said, ". School authorities are protecting their staff and using political means to shut the case."

On Wednesday, the school's principal issued a statement that said: "The school and the management are committed to ensure that the accused is punished to the fullest extent of the law."
