Parents complain to education department about Mahim school constantly switching uniforms

Despite a recent notice issued by the south Mumbai school education inspector prohibiting the sale of stationary and uniforms in school premises, a Mahim-based private institution is allegedly not just violating this rule, but also making parents frequently buy different uniforms for their children as they move up to higher classes. Moreover, the school has also hiked its annual fees from Rs 28,000 to Rs 44,000 (for standards 1 to 3) this year.

Parents irked by this move of Saraswati Mandir (CBSE) School on Senapati Bapat Marg have approached the school education department, complaining about the fee hike and the constant change of uniform between kindergarten and class III.

A parent who did not wish to be named, said, "The school frequently changes the uniform. I bought a new uniform for my kid during admission to junior KG. I had to buy a different one when my kid was promoted to standard 1. This time, they want us to give the measurements and well as buy the uniforms from school itself. Why should I buy the uniform from school if I can get it at a reasonable rate outside? We have submitted a complaint to the south Mumbai education department and hope that they will take some action on this issue."

Another parent said, "The school has started harassing students who have not paid for the uniforms. I had to buy a new uniform for my child, who is now in class 3. In a year, at least three teachers get changed, which we observe in Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) meetings. We also don't know why they decided to hike the fee so drastically this year."

The school, which currently holds classes between junior KG and standard 3, plans to start standard 4 classes this academic year. It has also put up a board outside the campus about starting classes for standards 5 and 6 too.

S M Suttankar, president of the school management, said, "All the allegations are baseless. The fee has been hiked after the approval of PTA members. Since the previous dealer was not supplying us good material for uniforms, we discontinued the supply. Hence we decided to change the uniform, which we are buying from a new dealer. The parents are being misled by a former school official. We are a very old trust and are not doing anything illegal. Everything is for the benefit of the students."
