What made one Aslam, a straight-laced and straight-faced man, kidnap the son of Kafeel Khan (29) of Kandivli? Was want of money alone enough to prompt such an act? The question plagues Kafeel and his wife, Nasreen Banu, now that their four-year-old Kamran has been returned to them safe and sound by police in Kandivli, where they stay.

On January 28, the police arrested the accused from a village in Uttar Pradesh and rescued the child from his custody, ending a seven-day drama that had taken the parents to breaking point.

Speaking to dna, Khan said, “I am yet to come to terms with the fact that our child is back home safely. To be honest, after two days (when he went missing) I and my wife had started losing hope.” He said he is brimming over with gratitude for the Kandivli police, who reunited him with his son.

Khan stated that he had met the accused Aslam Darjee a few days ago when he had come to ask him for some money. “He has been working with me for over a year and knows me very well, and we never expected he would do such a thing,” said Khan. Then Kamran went missing. The couple thought he had wandered away somewhere, and searched for him, feeling the pangs that only parents feel. The search proved fruitless. They approached the police, who mounted a futile search.

Khan said, “On January 24, I started feeling that I might not be able to see my child again and my wife kept crying. I was finding it difficult to pacify her when I myself was not in control of my feelings.”

Khan's worst fears were confirmed when Darjee made a ransom demand on January 26. “We had not eaten properly for three days. We were on the verge of mental breakdown. When the call came from Darjee we feared the worst would happen, and I prayed that Darjee would not harm my child,” said Khan.

When the cops told Khan they had rescued the child from Uttar Pradesh, he could not believe his ears. All his hopes for the future had been restored to him.
