In a shocking incident, a woman pregnant for five months was beaten to death by her husband and mother-in-law at Panvel on Sunday night. The reason- her parents were unable to give a dowry of Rs 50,000 as demanded by the husband's family.

Following an FIR registered by the woman's father, the Panvel city police have arrested both the husband and the mother-in-law on Monday afternoon. They have been sent to police custody for five days.

Police said that Chandan Kheire, 28, and Gauri, 21, got married about a year ago. They stayed at Par village in Panvel with Chandan's parents.

"During the wedding the victim's parents had given a hefty amount to the accused's family. However, they were unable to pay another Rs 50,000 as demanded by the latter, as they were not in a strong financial condition," said JN Girase, assistant police inspector from Panvel city police station.

"Six months after the marriage, the accused and his mother started harassing the victim seeking the remaining amount from her parents. The victim told her parents about it, but they were not in a condition to pay up. The accused then started assaulting her," he said.

On Sunday evening, Chandan and his mother Indu, 52, started abusing Gauri for the same reason. When Gauri replied that she was helpless to do anything, they started assaulting her.

"In a fit of rage, the accused punched the victim on her back, chest, face and other vital parts of her body. The victim was five months pregnant. After some time she started bleeding from her nose, mouth and ear. She was rushed to a nearby hospital, but she was declared dead on arrival by the doctors," Girase said.

Following an FIR registered by the victim's father, Ganesh Sanawle, the police arrested the accused from their residence on Monday afternoon. They have been booked under sections 304B, 498A and 34 of the Indian Penal Code. They were produced before the judicial court on Tuesday afternoon and have been remanded to police custody for five days.

"The victim's body will be delivered to her parents after conducting postmortem in the hospital. The accused works as an agent for some builder in Panvel. We don't know if he has any criminal record," another police officer said.
