Over 1.05 lakh hawkers from the city can now rejoice as the longstanding and most awaited hawkers' policy has been formulated, under which they would liable to operate in hawking zones and would also get insurance benefits.

Residents had been complaining against the growing hawker menace in the city and the issue had, on a handful of occasions, even led to minor accidents and a major obstacle in smooth vehicular movement.

Areas like Vasant Vihar, Raunak Park, Charai, Thane station road, Buddha Nagar, Lokpuram, Kavesar and Brahmand have been facing this problem and while after complaining the hawkers didn't turn up for a day or two, they resumed work shortly thereafter.

In many areas in Thane, hawkers' zones have been created and surprisingly, hawkers are not operating in those zones. Instead, they are operating at convenient locations. Residents complained on several occasions about this, following which a panel was formed that is headed by the commissioner, to look into the matter. It has been decided by the members that hawkers who want to operate in the area would have to pay Rs1,000 as registration fee, Rs600 for monthly rental, from which Rs50 would be directed towards insurance and medical," informs Sandeep Malvi, TMC PRO (Public Relation Officer).

From now on all the hawkers would have to collect a registration form that would be issued by TMC (Thane Municipal Commissioner) and only after submitting the form duly filled the hawker's would be allowed to operate in the area.

Dr Waman Kale, a panelist for hawkers appointed by TMC, informs, "All charges for the hawkers have been decided and in the next meeting that is scheduled for Thursday, other details regarding the place of hawking and the specific zones for them would be decided."

The hawkers' zone at Gandhinagar, Gamdevi, Anand Nagar have been lying unused and registering vendors would ensure these places are used.
