The Navi Mumbai crime branch interrogated a few bar waitresses from Nerul in connection with the murder of a young woman whose body was found along Palm Beach Road on Sunday morning.

The unidentified victim, aged between 20 and 25, was found murdered in the mangroves near Wadhva Residency on the west side of Palm Beach Road. Her throat was slit and her face and the upper part of the body had been burnt using chemicals. Her body was found by devotees going to the Bamandev temple.

"We detained a few waitresses from a bar in Nerul for interrogation on Tuesday evening. However, we did not arrest them due to lack of concerete evidence. Investigations are on and we cannot disclose much at this moment," said Maloji Shinde, police inspector from the crime branch.

Going by the cops' theory, the culprits might be locals of the area as investigating officers spotted two autos near the spot on CCTV footage. Autos from outside Navi Mumbai hardly ply on that road.

"Footage shows two autos parked around 2.30 am on Sunday at a place not far from the spot where the body was found. However, the registration numbers of the autos are not clear. It is a sensational case and we are taking all possible steps to solve it soon," said Shahaji Umap, deputy commissioner of police (zone 1).

The police suspects that the culprits came in those autos to dump the body near the mangroves. They then burnt the face and upper side of the victim's body to hide her identity.

"We have not recovered any weapon. However, we have found some match sticks that were used to burn the body. We don't have any clue about the chemical that was poured on the body," said Shekhar Bagde, senior inspector from Turbhe police station.

"We also took a dog squad to the spot. However, they led to the main road only, not beyond that. A team from the forensic lab also visited the spot on Tuesday," Umap added.

When asked if this could be an honour killing, Umap said, "We are exploring all possible angles, but we have not found anything concrete to come to a conclusion. Identifying the body is our first priority. It is also not confirmed if the victim was sexually assaulted before she was killed."

A case under sections 302 (murder) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence) of the Indian Penal Code has been registered in Turbhe police station.
