Maharashtra Social Justice Minister and Congress leader Shivajirao Moghe today said celebrating overnight to usher in new year was "aping" of Western culture which should be "discouraged". "We should not encourage the Western culture (of celebrating overnight to welcome New Year). This is a wrong tradition which has gained roots over a period of time and should be stopped," Moghe told reporters at a press conference.
The minister's comment came after the Bombay High Court today quashed the 1.30 am deadline set by Mumbai police for eateries, hotels and restaurants in the metropolis to remain open on the New Year eve and extended revelry time 5 AM.
"Why should we encourage Western culture as it leads to addiction," Moghe added.
