Despite a continuous demolition drive by the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) and the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) in Navi Mumbai, a survey conducted by CIDCO has found that over 800 new illegal constructions came up in the city last year.

"We have found in the latest survey that there are over 800 illegal constructions that came up in 2016," said a senior CIDCO official, on condition of anonymity.

Agencies like CIDCO, MIDC and NMMC demolished over 2000 illegal constructions across Navi Mumbai last year, which included illegal shrines. This was after the Bombay High Court had in September 2014 directed both the agencies to demolish all illegal structures constructed after December 2012.

On Monday, the Bombay High Court asked the state government to submit an action taken report within a month on illegal constructions in Navi Mumbai. The court also rapped the state government after a list of fresh illegal constructions were submitted to the court on Monday by Rajeev Mishra, an RTI activist.

It was because of a PIL filed by Mishra that the HC had in 2014 directed CIDCO, NMMC and MIDC to demolish 99 illegal buildings in Digha, Navi Mumbai.

Mishra has submitted a list of another 450 illegal constructions which were allegedly constructed after July 2015. Of the these illegal constructions, 130 were constructed after January 2016, according to the RTI activist.

Mishra said, "The HC has reiterated that it will not give respite to illegal structures through the government's plan to regularise these constructions." Of the fresh illegal constructions, a majority are currently under construction. However, Airoli and Ghansoli top the list of fresh illegal constructions. In September 2016, CIDCO had found in its survey that there were over 450 illegal religious structures in areas under NMMC jurisdiction. This includes NMMC areas under Thane district and parts of Panvel and Uran taluka in Raigad district. The agency had also issued notices to all such unauthorised structures under the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning (MRTP) Act 1966.
