The Sion police station on Friday arrested the canteen manager and a milk diary owner after 48 resident doctors of Lokmanya Tilak Medical College and Hospital in Sion fell ill after eating a sweet prepared to celebrate the Independence Day. The sweet was prepared in the Resident Medical Officers (RMO) canteen of the hospital on Friday.

Gopal Manja Devadiaya, 49, manager of the RMO canteen, was arrested along with Hetram Verma, 30, owner of Aggarwal milk diary at Antop Hill, by the Sion police. The duo was arrested after a resident doctor registered an FIR against them after 48 doctors allegedly suffered from food poisoning. According to Sion police, on the occasion of Independence Day, a breakfast was arranged for the resident doctors, wherein a sandwich and a tirnga barfi was served. After some time, the doctors started complaining about nausea and vomiting and had to be admitted. "We received an official complaint from one of the resident doctors last night and arrested the duo on that basis," said police inspector Dattaram Girap, of Sion police station.

The police believe that the mava which was used in the sweet could be adulterated and the doctors thus suffered food poisoning. "Devadiaya has been running the canteen for some time and till now, there has been no such complaint. So, we checked the place he brought the mava from, and later arrested Verma too," said PI Girap. The duo was produced before the court on Saturday and was granted bail.

Dr Avinash Supe, dean of Sion Hospital, said that most of the doctors have been discharged. "Only three of the 48 are still admitted, but stable," said Dr Supe. The administration has written to the canteen authorities on an urgent need to follow quality checks. Samples of mava and oil from the canteen has been sent for further investigation.
