In a major feat achieved in BDD Chawl redevelopment, more than 256 residents from the chawl have finally signed the agreement with MHADA. Out of the 256, 130 tenants have visited the site office at NM Joshi Marg to get their agreement registered online.

Out of a total of 800 tenants in these buildings that are undergoing redevelopment in the first phase, 451 are eligible as per final Annexure 2 (part 1). Eligibility of 349 tenants is in process with the Deputy Collector. A senior official from MHADA's Mumbai Board who is taking care of the redevelopment project said, "At present, online registration of transit agreements of 451 eligible tenants needs to be completed on a priority basis, following which they will be shifted to transit camps." Post redevelopment the tenants are expected to get two bedroom flats along with attached toilets.

Of the total 32 buildings in NM Joshi Marg, seven have been taken up for redevelopment in phase one.

More than 400 residents have been allotted transit accommodation within 2 kilometres of their current stay. Once they sign the agreement copies provided by MHADA, they will be shifted to transit houses.

"We have finalised the transit camps which are within 2 kilometres of their current stay. More than 256 tenants have signed and submitted their agreement to MHADA. We are in process of registering the agreements," said the official.

Following an incident of slab collapse last year in one of the chawls, MHADA has made a vigorous attempt to shift the tenants.

Last year a small portion of the slab in one of the BDD chawls located in NM Joshi Marg came crashing down. Luckily there no casualties were reported. However, this brought to the fore, the issue that these close to 95-year-old buildings need an urgent redevelopment.
