Over 2,000 students take part in Run for Unity

Most schools and colleges in the city observed Rashtriya Ekta Diwas (National Unity Day) on Friday. And more than 2,000 students participated in the 'Run for Unity' held at various places in Mumbai.

Many students from schools, students of NSS and Scout & Guides came on to the streets to participate in the Run for Unity organized by the education department in their respective zones.

More than 1,200 students from the department of student welfare, NSS, Lokala Academy, department of Life Long Learning and sports were present in the convocation hall at Fort to celebrate the birth anniversary of Sardar Ballabhbhai Patel.

The students, faculty and staff members of Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) also observed the day and took the unity pledge. A documentary film on Sardar Patel was screened on the occasion. A drawing competition was organised for school students residing in the campus, and the best drawing on theme, 'National Unity' won an award. Students, faculty members and staff members also took part in the 'Run for Unity'.

BD Fadtare, deputy director, school education, said: "The birth anniversary of Sardar Patel was observed by many institutions. Though it was not compulsory, out of patriotism most of them took part. In Mumbai, more than 2,000 students took part in the 'Run for Unity early in the morning. The chief minister also participated in the function along with students."
