Residents of PL Lokhande Marg in Chembur have been living in constant fear of falling prey to water-related ailments as they claim contaminated water is being supplied to several buildings in the area. In spite of repeated complaints to civic body, there has not been much improvement in the last couple of months, they say.

According to residents, they have been getting contaminated water for the last two months. Vishwanath Aroni, secretary of Shrinagar Society Complex in PL Lokhande Marg in Chembur, says that their complaints fell on deaf ears and over 200 families continue to receive contaminated water.

Residents claim that it all stared after a new sewage pipeline was laid down about four months ago. Aroni says, “About four months ago, the civic body had laid down new sewage pipelines. However, during the work, the water pipeline to few housing complexes damaged. And since then, they have been getting contaminated water.” He added that the sewage pipeline was also not laid down properly and, as a result, the water they received every morning contained mud and other substances like human waste from the sewerage line.

After their complains, the civic body did a little work, like flushing out water from some places, but that was not sufficient to decominate the water being supplied to the housing societies. “After we lodged a complaint with the M-West ward office, civic workers now come in the morning and flush out some water from the pipeline which mainly contains mud and other substances. But this does not make water free from contamination,” said another resident.

Residents say that civic body has assured them the sewerage line would be repaired very soon but it will not repair the water pipeline, leading to housing societies. “The civic officials ask us to repair water pipelineon  our own,” said the resident.

When contacted, assistant municipal commissioner of M west ward, Harshad Kale, said that the pipeline of the few housing complexes was old and there was leakage in them. "Since these pipelines are in a private area, BMC cannot do any repair work. Residents have to lay down new pipeline of their own."

He added, "There are around 20 complexes where such problems have been reported and we suggested them to bring a new plan for water pipeline which the civic body will approve."

However, he accepted that there is a possibility that the sewerage line may have leakage in some places. "There may be some leakage but change of water pipeline is the solution and in this case, BMC has no role," added Kale.
