Over 200 engineering students who failed in more than five subjects in the third year of their Bachelor of Engineering program as well as an earlier semester protested on Wednesday at Azad Maidan. The students demanded that Mumbai University allow them to appear for their VII and VIII semester exams in this academic year after clearing their ATKT (Allow to keep term), which was done in 2009 for the previous few batches after a circular was issued to this regard.

Dna had earlier reported about the students' grievances when they had approached the Bombay high court in October last year. The court provided them limited relief, directing MU to allow the students to appear for their viva and practical exam of the 7th semester that started on October 27. Students want to give their last semesters in the old exam pattern of 100 marks and not by the credit-based grading system as it will convert all their previous years marks into grades, which will in turn affect their final year result and placement.

An engineering student who did not wish to be named, said, "Since we were not permitted to give 7thsemester theory exam after giving our vivas, we want the university to at least take our 8th semester viva and take the theory exams of both the 7th and 8th semesters according to the old exam pattern of 100 marks in the next academic year. Giving credit-based grading pattern exam will not benefit us in any way."

The students' delegation was called to meet the officials in the university. They have submitted their demands to the officials, requesting them to consider their plea.
