With a sudden increase in the number of dengue cases and a subsequent rise in deaths, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has increased the number of inspections to identify breeding spots, apart from taking other measures, such as fumigation and prosecuting those in whose premises the spots are found.

A series of inspections carried out by BMC's insecticide department across the city in October once again proves that the breeding of aedes mosquito is far more prevalent in residential societies and high-rises as compared to slums. Last month, civic officials found 100 breeding spots in slums, and 1,080 in non-slum areas.

"The ones in slums were found in the drums used to store water, while in high-rises and other societies, they were found in the Feng Shui plants, flowers pots and petri dishes, which were uncovered and had stagnant water," said a senior civic official.

As per the data provided by the department, the maximum number of breeding spots were found in E ward, that covers Mumbai Central and Byculla. "As many as 220 breeding spots were found in the ward — 214 in non-slum areas and only six in slums," the official confirmed.

The team found only 11 breeding spots in R-south ward, which covers Kandivli, but all in non-slum areas.

This year, BMC has found 6,463 such spots across the city.

It is estimated that 11 people have died of dengue so far, but BMC has put the figure at nine. According to the civic body, 659 confirmed dengue cases have been recorded this year, and about 4,000 deemed suspected for lack of confirmed laboratory test results.

Softening stand
Even as BMC has prosecuted 864 residents, societies and shopkeepers on finding breeding spots in their premises, they have softened their stand on carrying out any arrests, as decided in the last standing committee meeting. "Most residents comply with our directions after they are sent notices. So, we will not need to carry out arrests," said a senior civic official.
