With newly-appointed party president Amit Shah at the helm, the BJP has decided to tackle the Maharashtra assembly polls with all guns blazing. The 'dynamic' leader has given clear cut instructions to state party leaders to prepare a ground report on the political situation in each of the state's 288 assembly constituencies.

The report is being considered a reality check before taking a decision whether the BJP can contest the October elections solo. "The mood among party cadres is that we should go it alone for the assembly polls. But senior leaders are of the opinion that we cannot snap ties with our oldest ally, the Sena, just like that. We have to asses our capabilities first. There are several seats where BJP has more support than the Sena's sitting MLA," a senior BJP leader told dna on Wednesday.

Devendra Fadnavis, state BJP president, however maintained that negotiation with Sena will be done after August 20 and that the party was in no mood to snap ties. However, when asked about who will play big brother during elections, he said, "We are definitely going to ask for more seats and will ensure that the sentiments of our party cadres are not hurt."

Senior BJP leader Vinod Tawde said the emergence of Amit Shah as party president has changed equations in a big way. "Shah has tremendous insight into politics and is good at social engineering. He demonstrated this in Uttar Pradesh and he will do it in Maharashtra too. The Sena does not have a towering personality like Bal Thackeray anymore. It should remember that its 18 candidates were elected to Lok Sabha because of the Modi wave," Tawde asserted.

The BJP is said to be working out a caste-combination of OBCs, Marathas and Brahmins with Pankaja Munde, Vinod Tawde and Devendra Fadnavis becoming the face of these communities respectively. Following the death of its tallest state leader Gopinath Munde, the party has decided to project his daughter Pankaja as his political heir. Meanwhile, it is learnt that Tawde will be fielded for the assembly polls from Borivli constituency which fell vacant with Gopal Shetty getting elected to the Lok Sabha. Atul Batkhalkar is expected to be given the ticket from Kandivli.
