Proposing status of union territory to border areas of Belgaum, Karwar and adjoining areas, president of the 89th All-India Marathi literary meet Sripal Sabnis on Monday said that with political will on part of the state and central governments, the border issue with Karnataka can have an out-of-court solution.

He was speaking at the concluding session of the event at Dnyanaba-Tukaram Nagari (Hindustan Antibiotics Ground) in Pimpri, 15km from Pune. Noted lyricist Javed Akhtar, union minister Nitin Gadkari, education minister Vinod Tawde, Sahitya Mahamandal president Madhavi Vaidya and reception committee chairman PD Patil were present on the dais.

Sabnis said the Marathi population in Belgaum and adjoining areas can't even receive funeral pass if they fill the form in Marathi, adding that though the issue is pending in the SC, an out-of-court solution is possible. He also said the state can take up the issue with the Centre and try to accord union territory status to Belgaum, Karwar and adjoining areas till the court verdict comes.

Stressing on the need for translating great work by legendary Marathi writers to other Indian languages, Akhtar said it is a positive sign that the youth is turning back to literature, music, dance and other art forms. He added that in the competition for prosperity and material growth, his generation had forgotten to pass on the rich heritage of art, culture and literature to the next generation.

Tawde expressed confidence that efforts started by the state and his department would result in getting the classical language status to Marathi.

"The contribution of literature and writers is the most important for social and economic development of the country and any society," said Gadkari, adding that while entertainment is also needed, literature is required to convey messages to society.
