To boost the cadaver organ donation program in the city, the Zonal Transplant Co-ordination Committee (ZTCC) has now decided to rope in former cadaver donor families. ZTCC wants to use these families to coax kin of brain dead patients to go for cadaver donation.

Thane's Prashant Jain is one such person whose help is being taken by the ZTCC for counselling brain dead patient's relatives. When Jain lost his 6-year-old son, he donated the boy's kidneys, liver and eyes in February 2014.

"I was made to share my experience on organ donation with a family to convince the members to agree for cadaver donation. People still have misconceptions about cadaver donation and I am happy to help ZTCC on the same," said Jain.

The ZTCC has formed a group of donor families who are keen to raise awareness of the noble deed. "When these donor families talk of their experience while deciding on donating the organs of their loved ones, it creates a positive impact. Their talks are motivational and clears misconceptions," said a source from ZTCC.

To promote the cause of organ donation, ZTCC has decided to start a three-month-long counselling course. "Donor families, their relatives and people interested in this cause can enroll for this course and get a formal training for counselling. This way, we will get more helping hands and this will help us facilitate more cadaver donations in the city," said the source.

The ZTCC, the source said, is in talks with the Tata Institute of Social Sciences to prepare the syllabus of the course. "Once that is ready, we start conducting the course in an interval of 3 to 6 months."
