Orders pouring in at premium cake shops for New Year's Eve

The sales of cakes in prominent hotels and shops have increased manifold in Mumbai and surrounding areas.

La Patisserie, the Cake Shop & Delicatessen at Taj Mahal Palace and Towers Hotel in Colaba is India's most sought-after and highest revenue generating cake shop.

A senior chef said, "We are India's oldest and most popular cake shop. Even though a lot of our age-old clients have shifted to other areas, La Patisserie is their favourite and they come here from wherever they reside now for cakes and other delicacies."

Others too have reported good sale figures, one of them being The Club in Andheri's DN Nagar. Its pastry chef Girdhar Gopal said, "Right from Christmas to New Year's sees a good demand for cakes. Some of the favourites are chocolate truffle, red velvet with cream cheese, fresh fruit cake, Dutch truffle and caramel crunch. We always use the best and imported ingredients."

Anshul Sethi, executive chef at ITC's Fortune Park LakeCity Hotel in Thane, said, "Not many like traditional cakes anymore. Nowadays, people are travelling more and more and they always look to try something new and exotic they sampled in some country. Hence, we are always on our toes, creative and keep following global trends, which is what has made us popular."

"Our most popular cakes are German chocolate cake, which is available only in our hotel in Mumbai, fresh fruit cake, chocolate cashewnut cake and blueberry cheesecake," he added.

Le Cordon Bleu-trained chef Bunty Mahajan's Deliciae Patisserie is another premium cake and pastry shop, which has been doing good business. She is popular among Bollywood celebrities and also made a cake for Salman Khan's birthday last week. She has three outlets, in Khar's Out of the Blue, Powai's Haiko Mall, and inside Frozen Yogurt Inc. in Juhu.

"There is a phenomenal growth in demand for cake for New Year's Eve celebration. Despite advance booking, orders are constantly pouring in for more cakes. Our aim is to serve the most creative and well finished cakes that also taste divine," said Mahajan.

"We work with our guests to understand their requirement, and then suggest the best option. Our bestsellers are Belgian chocolate cake, caramel crunch, milk Belgian with Oreos, red velvet and basic chocolate truffle cakes."
