Ample supply of orange has brought down its price at the wholesale market in Vashi sharply. The seasonal fruit is available at a very low price at the Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC), Vashi.

The APMC Vashi has been receiving huge supply of oranges in the last one fortnight which has brought down its price sharply. The minimum price of orange at the APMC Vashi is Rs100 for eight dozens which comes in a box. Even the upper range is low as compared to the last season. "With good supply of oranges at the APMC, the price of the fruit is under control," said Sanjay Pansare, director of fruits market at APMC.

There has been a decline in the rates of the fruit in market this season. Pansare added that the best quality of oranges are available at Rs400 for eight dozens which was around Rs800 last year. In last season, the hailstorm hit the production of the commodity and short supply pushed the price in the wholesale as well as in the retail market.

Traders at the wholesale market informed that the supply of oranges is not only good, but also the quality of the fruit is good. "The fruit juicy and sweet with longer shelf life," said a trader from APMC Vashi.

The Vashi APMC receives orange from Amravati, Ahmednagar and Vidarbha. "The wholesale market is receiving more than 12 trucks laden with oranges everyday which is sufficient to match the demand," said a trader at the APMC Vashi.

On the contrary, consumers claim that the retail price of oranges is not matching with the claim of wholesale market. "Even a small size orange is available around Rs30 to Rs40 per dozen which quite high compare to wholesale price," said Nilu Mhatre, a housewife from Nerul.

However Mhatre have agreed that quality of this season oranges is much better than last season when there were spots on the skin of the fruit. "This time, oranges have good taste and juicy," added Mhatre.
