Uproar over tainted ministers did not allow the Legislative Council to conduct normal business for the second day in continuation on Tuesday. The Congress-led Opposition said it would not allow the House to function until an inquiry is commissioned against the "tainted" ministers under the Commission of Inquiry Act.
The drama began as soon as the House assembled for the day's proceedings at 12 noon. Not allowing panel chairman Niranjan Davkhare to commence the question hour session, leader of Opposition Dhananjay Munde got up and demanded an inquiry against the "tainted" ministers under the Commission of Inquiry Act.
In support of his demand, other Opposition members came into the well and started shouting slogans against the government.
"Despite all the proofs submitted against the ministers in the House, Mr clean chief minister is issuing clean chits to his ministers. Those who are accused of corruption are giving themselves a clean chit because they know the CM will back them despite their wrong doings," Munde said.
"Unless the government concedes to our demand of ordering an inquiry under the Commission of Inquiry Act by a sitting high court judge, we will not let the House function," he said.
Congress MLC Manikrao Thakre too refused to give in and allow the functioning of the House until the demands of the Opposition parties are met by the government.
Peasants and Workers Party MLC Jayant Patil said, "If an inquiry can take place against former revenue minister Eknath Khadse and he had to resign, then why not against the others. This is not justice." Congress member Sharad Ranpise said, "How can those who are accused of irregularities defend themselves and give themselves a clean chit? An inquiry should be conducted under Commission of Inquiry Act."
In the ensuing commotion, Davkhare first adjourned the House proceedings for 15 minutes and later for 25 minutes.
When the Opposition refused to relent despite the adjournments, chairman Ramraje Nimbalkar called for the tabling of supplementary demands, after which the House was adjourned for the day.
