Opposition parties outmanoeuvred the Shiv Sena on Friday when the DP was tabled in the corporation meeting. The Sena was left red-faced by the others by what they called as 'Floor Management', raising objections over the Draft Development Plan and demanding a poll over whether to approve it or not, leaving no scope for the party to express its objection as it had declared earlier.

The Sena had said it will oppose the draft DP as the BJP has tried to give away all open spaces/green spaces, salt pan land and no development zones to developers in the name of housing schemes. Sena leaders had also met the CM in order to put forth their objections to the DP.

However, on Friday, it did not object the DP formally and instead circulated a letter from the leader of the House when the Opposition (Congress, NCP, SP and MNS) called for a poll.

In Friday's general body meeting, the civic administration presented the DP, seeking permission to publish it. All the Opposition parties demanded permission to make a statement on the DP, which mayor Snehal Ambekar denied. This prompted them to demand a poll.

As per rules, all present corporators are expected to vote for or against the proposal. The Sena then found itself in a spot. It had earlier objected to the DP but could not do so in the House as its members had to support the party's alliance partner to show solidarity. Ultimately, the Sena was left red-faced and voted in favour of the proposal. Although the Opposition did not get the numbers in the poll, it managed to make the ruling party fall flat on its face.

Sena leader Trushna Vishwasrao, however, later tried to save face by issuing a statement, that the party has just allowed the DP to be published but still stands by its objections.

Opposition leader in the BMC Pravin Chheda alleged that the BJP wants to dole out all the open and green spaces and even the NDZ to developers. "Encouraging developers is BJP's aim. It has plans to raise a structure as tall as Burj Khalifa. And Amit Shah is the mastermind. He is giving instructions to the state government and the latter is pressurising BMC commissioner to make suitable changes in the DP," said Chheda.

Samajwadi Party leader Rais Shaikh said, "We managed to expose the double standards of the Sena. The party said something else to the public but wants to support the BJP."

MNS corporator Chetan Kadam said we had opposed attack on green zone from the very start. Our objection will remain."

The DP will now be published on BMC's website soon.
