Opposition boycott standing committee meet over water issue

Members of opposition parties boycotted the standing committee meeting on Thursday over the issue of water shortage in the city. The leaders expressed their concern stating that the BMC is not taking the issue seriously.

Congress corporator from Ghatkopar Pravin Chheda, said that the residents of his area are facing water shortage for the past three days. "The administration is deliberately misleading us. We have asked the authorities to declare the exact status of water, however, they have fail to do so," he said.

Chheda also added that he came to know that the hydraulic engineering department is contemplating on providing water every alternate day, if the situation worsens.

BJP corporator Ameet Satam, highlighted the issue of an enormous quantity of water getting wasted through leakages.

Additional municipal commissioner Mohan Adtani. who was present in the meeting admitted that the rainfall at the catchment area has not been adequate enough for the past couple of days. "Even though there has been rainfall in Mumbai, it is not sufficient to fill the lakes," he said.

According to him, only 207mm of rain has been recorded in the catchment area instead of 797mm.

"Apart from speeding up water projects for long term usage, we will take a decision on cutting water supply to swimming pools (commercial establishment). We will also carry out awareness campaigns so that people start saving more water," Adtani said, adding that on July 15, tenders for inviting bidders for the cloud-seeding process, which is the last option for the BMC.

However, on Wednesday, additional municipal commissioner Rajiv Jalota, has informed that 89% of the water supply is used for commercial purposes, so taking action against them will be a drop in the sea. "But if the need arises, we will do that," he said.
