Deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar’s statement about cutting off the gentitals of rapists to stop the crime has attracted the ire of Opposition parties.

Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council Vinod Tawde said that Pawar, first of all, should have used decent language.

“Being the deputy chief minister, Pawar should have used the language of law. His statement does not do well for the state’s image. If he feels so strongly about this issue, then the government should be framing a policy on this. He should not be advocating extra-constitutional methods,” said Tawde.

On the other hand, BJP leader Shaina NC said, “Pawar should first show that he means what he says. He should introspect on the functioning of the Home department, especially the low conviction rate of crimes. There is a huge backlog of cases of atrocities against women and the government is doing nothing about it. Just making statements does not help.”

Pawar made the statement while addressing a function organised by the Nationalist Congress Party’s women’s wing in Jalna recenly.

Reacting to it, Shiv Sena spokesperson Sanjay Raut said: “Who will take up the task of cutting the rapists’ private parts? This is a shameless government. Earlier too, Pawar had promised that he would teach a lesson to moneylenders who exploit the poor. But nothing has happened. He only makes tall claims to influence people.”

Shiv Sena MLC Neelam Gohre, however, said that Pawar’s statement was a ploy to divert attention from the irrigation scam. He wanted to lure women voters by making such a “bold statement”.
