Do not be surprised if you are lately finding it easier to navigate through south Mumbai's popular shopping hub — Fashion Street. The BMC has devised a simple way to ensure pedestrians' comfort on the street which is usually choked with hawkers and crowded with shoppers.

Following repeated complaints from residents on inefficient ward-level checks on hawkers, the central removal of encroachment department of the BMC has taken over the job. If they are found selling goods outside their stalls, it is being seized immediately.

A fortnight ago, the civic authorities asked the hawkers at Fashion Street to carry out businesses as usual, but within the stalls allocated to them. Hawkers there usually operated metres beyond their stalls that led to a spillage of goods on footpath, forcing pedestrians to walk on the road. This, in turn, resulted in massive traffic snarls across the area.

Deputy municipal commissioner BG Pawar said that a hawker having a 4 feet by 4 feet stall displayed his wares up to five feet outside his stalls' areas. "Many stalls put up metal stands outside their stalls, occupying the footpath. We, along with additional municipal commissioner (city) are ensuring that they operate only in their designated areas," he said.

Following the success at Fashion Street, the BMC has also started applying the same model at Linking Road, another popular shopping destination at Bandra-Khar. dna had recently reported how the ward-level committee at the H-west ward has proposed to take off hawking zones all together off Linking Road.

Senior civic officials informed that the initiative will be extended to all railway stations across the city, starting with Dadar railway station. "Areas around railway stations see the maximum vendors. We hope this initiative will organise the crowd and ease traffic around stations," Pawar said.
