In partial relief to the Marine Drive residents, the Maharashtra government has recommended to the Centre that art deco buildings facing the sea and Oval Maidan be nominated for the UNESCO World Heritage Site tag, but it has excluded buildings situated on the A,B,C,D roads on Marine Drive.

This, in turn, could pave way for their redevelopment, as was strongly argued by the locals. Additionally, the government has not recommended the inclusion of the entire Fort area for the UNESCO World Heritage Site tag.

State urban development secretary, Nitin Kareer, told DNA, "Marine Drive, Oval Maidan and Fort are heritage precincts already, and they are protected under the city's heritage regulations. There are no changes in rules and restrictions applicable for these heritage precincts. Out of these precincts, only three rows of buildings and their connections are being recommended for nomination as UNESCO World Heritage Site.'' He clarified that redevelopment of other buildings will be possible.

Another official said the buildings on Marine Drive — starting from the Dinshaw Wachcha Marg and ending at Princess Street flyover — are being considered, adding that buildings at Veer Nariman Road are not in contention. As far as Oval Maidan precinct is concerned, only those buildings facing the ground are being recommended. The buildings on A, B, C and D roads on Marine Drive can be redeveloped.

However, BJP legislator Raj Purohit isn't happy, as he claims the entire exercise is still shrouded in secrecy and there has been no dialogue with stakeholders. "The residents should have been given an opportunity to argue their side. A meeting of residents will be convened in the coming week to understand their viewpoint. Thereafter, I will take up the matter with the Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis,'' he said.
