The deadline for compulsory waste segregation and composting for 3,337 bulk generators in Mumbai has ended and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is now set to take stringent action against defaulters. As of December 31, only 299 bulk generators started composting while 1,423 bulk generators have asked for extension. “Somewhere stringent actions needs to be started. The defaulters may face actions like daily fines, starting from Rs 5,000 to Rs 50,000 or even prosecution and collection of unsegregated waste may be stopped,” informed Additional Municipal Commissioner, Vijay Singhal.

The BMC will hold a review meeting on Thursday where it will be decided what action needs to be taken on the kind of defaulters. On July 1, 2017, Municipal Commissioner Ajoy Mehta had announced that all bulk generators including housing societies and commercial structures set up on more than 20,000 sq m area and societies generating waste more 100 kg daily should compulsorily segregate waste into wet and dry, and compost the wet waste in their premises only. The original deadline was October 2, 2017 which was extended for three months.

As per data accessed by DNA, a BMC report dated December 31, 2017 states that of 3,777 notices sent to bulk generators across Mumbai for compulsory waste segregation and composting, 2,699 have not yet complied to the notices. BMC has issued notices under MMC Act Section 368, under MRTP Act Section 53 (1) and under Environment Protection Act.

“We have given enough time to comply to waste segregation norms and set up composting pits. Somewhere stringent actions will have to start so that societies begin waste seggregation and composting in their premises or community composting is there is space constrain,” Singhal added.

Until now now only three community composting locations have started.
