Only 1% water contamination in city: BMC report

However, parts of A, B, R/Central, G/North wards see up to 5% contamination despite average down from 3% in 2016

Despite having been criticised for water contamination in the city a number of times, a report by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) environment department claims the average water contamination across the city has reduced to a mere one per cent in the year 2017-18. The report is yet to be approved by the BMC house.

The average water contamination in Mumbai in the year 2016-17 was three per cent and 4.6 per cent in 2015-16. Ironically, the contamination in the posh locality of A ward (Colaba, Cuffe Parade) and R/Central ward (Borivali) is five per cent while in K west (Andheri west) and P/North (Kandivali) it stands below one per cent.

Deputy municipal commissioner, Environment, Vishwas Shankrwar said, "I cannot comment on the report as it has been submitted to the corporation and only after it is approved can I comment on it."

The five per cent water contamination level in A ward — comprising of major south Bombay areas — is even higher than wards like B, C and E, which comprise of areas like Madanpura, Byculla, Girgaum, Mohd Ali Road and others.

In the central suburbs, the water contamination in areas of T ward — which includes Mulund — is at one per cent, and is the same for Bhandup under S ward.

In western suburb's R Central ward comprising of areas like Borivali, water contamination is the highest at 5 per cent, while K West ward including Andheri west, Juhu and Versova have below one per cent water contamination.

The situation is same in P North where the contamination is less than one per cent, this ward includes Kandivali. In the B ward, contamination is at four per cent while in G/North, the contamination is at three per cent. In areas like Bandra, the level of water contamination stands at two per cent while in Worli and Lower Parel it stands at one per cent

CIVIC REPORT

The report states the level of water contamination in Bandra this year is 2% and one per cent in Lower Parel and Worli. The average water contamination across Mumbai was 4.5% in the year 2015-16
