The auspicious day of Mahashivratri spurred on hundreds of women to participate in the Stayfree Women For Change DNA I Can Women’s Half Marathon despite keeping a fast. “I did not want to break the custom of fasting on Mahashivratri. I have been doing it for 20 years. While running the marathon, I ensured that I kept myself hydrated regularly and that helped,” said Dr Vidula Pendharkar, who completed the half marathon in 2.58 hours.

Dr Pendharkar, associate researcher at KEM hospital, ran to create awareness about anaemia and malnutrition. “My husband is a regular at marathons. He has been my inspiration and I have been training with him. Sunday’s marathon was special because it was a litmus test for me,” Dr Pendharkar, a resident of Thane, told DNA.

Apeksha Bhalerao, like Dr Pendharkar, relied on drinking lots of water and a cup of tea to complete the 10km spirit run. “I have been fasting for six years. It was a coincidence that Mahashivratri and the marathon fell on the same day. I did not want to miss either,” said Bhalerao, a TPA coordinator in Ghatkopar. Her two friends, who were also fasting, and she finished the 10km run in 1.30 hours. “I felt good after completing the run. It was an experience,” said Bhalerao, who ran to create awareness about anaemia.

Thirty-five yoga instructors from Patanjali Yog Samiti completed the 10km run despite having kept a fast for 24 hours. “Our aim of participating in the marathon was to promote naari shakti and tell women to take care of their health. We knew that our Mahashivratri fast will never be a hindrance to spread the message,” said Supriya Modave, who completed the run 1.40 hours.
