Cake laddoos by Gayatri Sarang

Move over modaks and laddoos; there is a new sweet in SoBo called the 'cake laddoo'. As the name suggests, it's shaped like the popular Indian sweet—a favourite of Lord Ganesha—and is setting new culinary benchmarks.

It comes in four flavours: raspberry, blueberry, chocolate and peanut butter, and mava and coconut and is available at Prabhadevi resident and home baker, Gayatri Sarang's culinary kitchen, Bombay Baker.

A former scribe, Sarang quit her desk job with a popular business newspaper to pursue her passion for baking. "I took a sabbatical and started baking as I didn't want to get back to school," quips the baking enthusiast who embraced baking like a fish takes to water. "I got hooked on to baking and realised that I enjoyed it a lot more than my regular job!" So, she decided to ditch her 9-to-5 and don the chef's hat. "It's been three-and-a-half years since I quit my job, and I have never regretted my decision," she says.

A month old, Bombay Baker stocks desserts, cakes and custom-themed desserts. It even offers sticky toffee pudding, German crumb cake and Rugelach—classics from around the world that are tough to find in Mumbai. Freshly baked to order, the desserts contain no added preservatives or trans fat. Sarang prides herself in using only pure, premium ingredients like Callebaut chocolate couverture over compound chocolate, Madagascar vanilla instead of the synthetic Vanilla essence, butter over shortening and so on. None of her desserts contain non-vegetarian ingredients; many bakeries will use gelatine derived from animal bones and still put a green dot on the package label. Sarang goes so far as to use only embryo-free eggs.

"Food is something everyone is willing to try. And while there are a lot of home bakers out there, I don't think there is a dearth of customers." Bombay Baker's latest addition are the eggless modaks. "They make for a perfect gift when you are visiting friends and relatives," says Sarang, who has priced her products competitively, "That's the benefit of being a home baker. Your products end up being a lot cheaper than the ones available at retail outlets."

Eggless cake laddoos for Ganesh Chaturthi are available in four flavours:
Mawa-coconut (Ganapati special)
Chocolate-peanut Butter
Raspberry
Blueberry
A box of six will cost you Rs. 250 while a box of 12 costs Rs. 500.
