It is likely that mobile app-based taxi services like Uber and Ola would not be available on February 6; even if they are, be prepared for a heavy surge in pricing. Majority of the drivers are expected to participate in a protest against rising fuel prices, which according to the unions, has made these services less profitable for them in the past few months.

The Maharashtra State Rashtriya Kaamgaar Sangh (transport wing) has called for a protest on February 6, in which drivers of taxi aggregators, along with some regular kaali peelis and auto rickshaws are expected to participate. The union blames the government for the rising fuel prices that is affecting their livelihood.

"Fuel price has been on a constant rise. This has made life difficult for the drivers. Their daily earnings have dropped considerably. So, we will take out a morcha on Tuesday," said NCP leader Sachin Ahir, who is the president of this union and is leading the protest.

They will be joined by Active Committee of Maharashtra (ACM), which is another group of app-based cab drivers — who will march against the aggregators and government. "Most of the cars used for Ola and Uber run on diesel. Its prices have increased from Rs 48 to Rs 68. Even petrol prices have crossed Rs 80 per litre. However, there have been no subsequent talks of increasing fares," said another union leader.

The protest rally will commence at 2pm from Santacruz (E) and will go till the Transport Commission Office in Bandra (E). The Khatua Committee report submitted to the state government has asked for a base fare and a cap on surge pricing that goes up to five times now.
